Rice University offers a Precollege Program for students aged 13 and above, focusing on Medicine, Diagnostics, Treatment, and Patient Care. This course aims to engage students in understanding the procedures that take patients from the initial diagnosis to treatment. It provides insights into common diseases affecting the heart, lungs, brain, and endocrine system, and how medical professionals work together to address the unique needs of patients. The curriculum covers the basic science of each pathophysiology and the clinical approach. Students will gain understanding of the diagnostic process, the roles of doctors and other medical professionals, and the major aspects of a physical examination. They will explore the impact of diseases like congestive heart failure and COPD on the body and evaluate various treatments and advancements. The program culminates with a Capstone Project where students analyze a patient's case, including medical history, physical condition, diagnostic imaging, and treatment, from a multidisciplinary perspective. The program is offered in a 100% online format that includes video lectures and real-life simulations. Students can expect between 20-30 hours of total instruction and course work. It is designed to work around the student's schedule, offering flexibility in learning. The course is designed by Dr. Mehdi Razavi, a cardiac electrophysiologist at the Baylor College of Medicine and Adjunct Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Rice University. He is highly engaged in undergraduate and graduate education and has received multiple teaching awards for his contributions. Upon completion of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of how medical professionals work together to provide patient care, the ability to process incoming information to create an accurate diagnosis for a given condition, and will earn a Certificate of Completion from Rice University. However, no transcripts or letters of recommendation are needed to apply, just basic contact information and a statement of why the student wishes to take the course.
