Back to database

The MLSC High School Apprenticeship Challenge is a program designed to facilitate and fund paid internships for underrepresented and low-income high school students in Massachusetts. Its main objectives include creating more than 100 new internship opportunities annually by subsidizing intern wages for small life sciences companies and research institutions. The program aims to provide rigorous biotechnology and biomedical training, develop professional workplace skills, increase awareness of life sciences careers, and build a diverse STEM workforce pipeline. The program offers a pre-internship lab training component for some districts, focusing on biotechnology, biomedical, and professional skills development. Internships can be part-time or full-time and must occur between May and April of the following year. The MLSC reimburses host organizations up to $4,080 per intern, based on $17 per hour for six weeks of full-time work. This initiative is part of a broader effort to foster relationships between economically disadvantaged schools and life sciences employers. Participants gain valuable work-based learning experiences, enhanced professional skills, and increased exposure to life sciences career paths. The program's delivery includes both in-person internships and lab training sessions. There is no strict application deadline, as placements are made on a rolling basis until funding is fully allocated.
