The Moving Forward Community Cohort, developed by the Youth Leadership Institute, is a youth-based healing initiative designed for young individuals aged 13-20 in Merced County. It aims to provide alternative forms of healing, mentorship, professional development, political education, and personal growth. The program employs Indigenous practices and organizes talking circles, encouraging participants to share personal experiences and opinions on various topics affecting Black, Indigenous, and communities of color. The program also encompasses ceremonial activities, such as sweat ceremonies, Day of the Dead, Winter Solstice, and Spring Equinox, which further contribute to the healing and growth of the youth. The cohort's curriculum includes media workshops where participants document their experiences through poetry, writing prompts, photography, journaling, leading to the collective creation of a 'zine. It also involves a youth-led participatory research project, currently focusing on cannabis policies in Merced schools. The program is guided by the Joven Noble curriculum and closely collaborates with Indigenous community elder, Maestro Robert Castro, from Youth Outreach and Leadership Institute (YOALI), who consistently advises and participates in the development of the program. The Community Cohort session takes place on Tuesdays from 4:00pm-5:30pm at the yli Merced Office. It is open to youth aged 14-20 who have been impacted by incarceration and/or foster care. The program offers monthly stipends and internship opportunities, in addition to providing strong interpersonal relationships. Upon completion of the Moving Forward Community Cohort, participants are expected to gain enhanced personal growth, healing, and professional development. They will be equipped with profound insights into different societal issues and be able to document their experiences through various forms of media. They will also have the opportunity to participate in research projects, thereby increasing their understanding of policy and societal systems.
