The Canadian Museum of Nature offers a museum volunteer opportunity that allows individuals to immerse themselves in the world of science and natural history. The main objective of the program is to inspire museum visitors and school groups with the volunteers' passion and knowledge, contribute to scientific research, collections care, and promote the museum to new visitors, members, and supporters. Volunteers are trained to communicate and protect natural history in Canada. They are given the opportunity to develop job-related customer service, teamwork, interpersonal, and administrative skills. They also receive benefits such as free museum visits, discounts at the Nature Boutique, and the chance to attend lectures and workshops, which allows them to further their knowledge and understanding of nature. This volunteer opportunity is mainly in-person, offering hands-on experience in various museum operations. Volunteers are required to commit a half-day a week for a minimum of three to four months. Although it is not specified, training and review of information relevant to the volunteers' position are part of the program. Anyone from youth aged 14-17 to adults and retirees can apply, with no specific qualifications required. However, a willingness to learn is valued, and volunteers are expected to complete a security clearance, including digital fingerprinting. Strong communication skills are an asset as volunteers usually work in teams. While bilingualism in English and French is preferred, it is not a requirement for most positions. By the end of their volunteering period, participants are expected to have a broader understanding of Canada's natural history, improved teamwork and communication skills, and a more profound appreciation for museum and community service. The chance to interact and connect with individuals with similar interests is also a significant part of the volunteering experience.
