The NASA App Development Challenge (ADC) is a coding competition designed for middle and high school students to engage in solving technical problems related to deep space exploration missions. The main objective of the ADC is to foster foundational knowledge and introduce students to the topics, techniques, and technologies critical to NASA’s Artemis program. Through this challenge, students contribute directly to the Artemis Generation's efforts to land astronauts on the Moon, including the first woman and the first person of color, and ultimately prepare for missions to Mars. The challenge covers key topics and skills such as processing and visualizing trajectory data, creating visualizations of communication information, and planning missions. Middle school teams focus on displaying the path of Artemis II using position data, while high school teams incorporate both position and velocity data. Both levels utilize SCaN antenna data to prioritize communication assets. The ADC is delivered entirely online and spans a period of 10 weeks, starting with a virtual kickoff event on October 2, 2024, and concluding with a video submission on December 11, 2024. Key dates include several live virtual connection events throughout October and November, and a culminating event in April 2025 for top teams. Teams must be led by a sponsor or educator from a formal or informal U.S. education organization, and participants must be in grades 5-8 for middle school teams or grades 9-12 for high school teams. There are specific requirements for team composition and participation, including the need for a signed letter of support from a principal or administrator. Participants will gain skills in app development using various programming languages and problem-solving related to space missions. High-performing teams have the opportunity to present their work to NASA subject matter experts and participate in a culminating event at NASA's Johnson Space Center. This challenge provides students with practical experience and insights into the field of space exploration and communication technology.
