The New Hampshire Youth Band, provided by the University of New Hampshire, offers a unique enrichment experience to students in grades 7-12. The band focuses on concert band instruments and is an excellent opportunity for dedicated instrumentalists who seek to engage with more challenging and sophisticated musical experiences. Students who participate in this program often return to their respective school music programs more accomplished and prepared to take on leadership roles. The band is co-directed by UNH Faculty member Mark Zielinski and UNH Faculty Emeritus Mark DeTurk, who bring their expertise and passion to the program. Participants can benefit from the resources and opportunities available on a college campus, including excellent equipment, a beautiful concert hall, and assistance from college music students. The program is delivered in-person with rehearsals taking place on Tuesday evenings from 5:40 to 7:45 pm at the Paul Creative Arts Center at the University of New Hampshire. The band meets for two ten-week sessions each year. The fall session includes ten rehearsals leading up to a concert, while the winter session commences at the end of January culminating in a final concert in April. Participation requires a tuition fee of $125 per semester, but the final concerts are free of charge. Through participation in the New Hampshire Youth Band, students gain experience performing advanced, age-appropriate music at a high level, thereby developing their musical skills and confidence.
