This competition offers students the opportunity to enhance their acting skills through master classes conducted by industry professionals. The competition progresses through three rounds: preliminaries, semi-finals, and a regional final. The top two winners from each region earn an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to compete in the National Finals at the Apollo Theater for cash prizes. This event not only promotes artistic growth but also provides a national platform for students to showcase their skills, fostering learning, recognition, and advancement in their pursuit of artistic excellence. It's offered in these regions: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Kansas City, Milwaukee, New York, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Tulsa. The competition's objectives include connecting students to contemporary Black writers, introducing them to acting techniques that enhance their performance skills, supporting co-curricular connections, and emboldening them to use their voices for social action. Participants choose monologues from contemporary playwrights that reflect the richness and diversity of the Black experience, elevating students from performers to storytellers. This competition celebrates diverse narratives and empowers young artists to breathe life into compelling stories. Participants benefit from learning advanced acting techniques and gaining recognition in the field of performing arts, offering them a significant stepping stone for future endeavors in the arts.
