The NOAA Ocean Guardian Youth Ambassador Program is an innovative program designed by the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. The main objective of the program is to cultivate, connect, and activate youth changemakers, supporting a thriving sanctuary system to protect the nation's underwater treasures, and inspire momentum for a healthy ocean among the next generation. This program provides an opportunity for young people passionate about ocean conservation to develop valuable skills such as time management, leadership, team-building, project management, and community outreach. It enables participants to increase their knowledge of NOAA, marine protected areas, marine ecosystems, and environmental problems, and to engage in current ocean conservation and ocean and climate literacy efforts happening in the United States. The program is delivered online, with participants required to attend monthly webinars. These webinars cover a range of topics, including the National Marine Sanctuary System, threats to the ocean, ocean optimism, NOAA programs and careers, opportunities for engagement, and future leadership programs. Furthermore, the Youth Ambassadors are expected to lead a project or event at their school or in their community that supports ocean conservation and stewardship. This could be anything from a beach cleanup to a social media campaign, or even starting a school's environmental club. While the exact duration of the program is not specified, the Ambassador's role involves tracking progress on their school or community project, actively engaging in discussions with other Ambassadors, and completing the Climate Resilience in Your Community Activity Book over the course of the program. The program also includes support from NOAA staff in a specific area of interest. This learning opportunity is open to youth aged 13-18 who are committed to ocean conservation and stewardship. The main outcome of the program is to develop the skills to become an ocean conservation leader and to strengthen interest in the ocean conservation field. Upon completion, depending on meeting attendance, completion of evaluation, progress of the stewardship project or event, and other prerequisites, participants will earn one of four completion tiers.
