University NOW is a program designed to provide underrepresented high school students in San Diego with the opportunity to experience college life and earn college credits while still in high school. This free program focuses on helping students envision themselves as successful college students by offering them the chance to complete two university-level courses: Writing, and Human Biology and Bioethics. These courses are integrated into an interdisciplinary curriculum that spans two semesters. Students typically participate in the program three days a week in the afternoon at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU). The curriculum is designed to be rigorous, providing students with a preview of the demands of college coursework while offering robust support to ensure their success. Key components of the program include accessible professors from the biology and writing departments, university student tutors who act as role models, and hands-on laboratory experiences. Additionally, students participate in a class retreat to foster community and motivation. Upon successful completion, students may earn one semester of college credit for both biology and introductory writing, giving them a significant head start on their college education. The program has a strong track record of success, with over 85% of participants going on to college, many of whom have graduated from prestigious universities and pursued careers in medicine, teaching, research, and various other fields. University NOW is supported by private donors and has been successful in serving 20 to 25 students each year. The program continues to seek additional funding to expand its reach and provide tuition scholarships to former participants who wish to major in the sciences at PLNU.
