The Police Explorers program offered by the Seattle Police Department (SPD) is a unique opportunity designed to bridge the gap between youth and police by educating and involving them in police operations, and to stimulate interest in Law Enforcement. It is open to young men and women aged 14 to 21 who are registered as full-time students with a grade point average of 2.5 or above, and who have not been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor. This engaging program aims to enhance each Explorer's education, encourage participation in rewarding and productive service activities, and prepare them for future roles as citizens and community members. The curriculum covers a broad range of law enforcement topics, including the history of law enforcement, patrol procedures, accident and criminal investigations, crime scene investigation, vice and narcotics, organized crime, and homicide among others. Participants also learn about search and arrest procedures, defensive weapons, fingerprint lifting and classifications, and crowd and riot control procedures. The program is delivered in-person, with Explorers meeting twice monthly. In addition to these meetings, Explorers are required to participate in a minimum of one community event per month. To become an Explorer, candidates must attend 2-4 monthly meetings in succession, submit an application, pass a background check, and undergo an oral interview by a panel of existing Explorers. Instructors include Officers and Detectives with special skills who are invited to meetings to explain how the Police Department investigates major crimes. Explorers also gain practical experience by volunteering at community events, doing security work, directing traffic, and providing overall community service. They also have the opportunity to learn first-hand how Police Officers do their jobs by making in-person visits to units such as K-9 and Harbor Patrol. Successful completion of the program equips participants with a working knowledge of police work and valuable leadership and life skills. It provides them with a unique opportunity to interact with the public, make new friends, and contribute to their community. Some Explorers have even leveraged the program to achieve a career in policing.
