The PYSO Philharmonic Orchestra is a full symphonic ensemble of over 100 junior and senior high school musicians. It is part of the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestras' training program and is designed for students showcasing advanced technical skills and musicality. The main objective of this program is to provide young musicians with the opportunity to hone their talents through rigorous training and performance experiences. The curriculum focuses on performing literature such as Bizet L’Arlesienne Suite #2, Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture, Saint-Saens Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah, and Dvorak Symphony #8. The young musicians undergo weekly rehearsals led by world-class conductors and sectionals coached by professional musicians. They also participate in weekend retreats and perform in high-quality venues throughout the Valley. The program is delivered in-person, with musicians selected through a rigorous audition process. Although the exact duration of the program is not mentioned, it is known that the orchestra holds rehearsals every Wednesday and conducts performances throughout the year. The instructors for the PYSO Philharmonic Orchestra are professional musicians and world-class conductors. The main requirement for participation is an audition showcasing the student's musicality and advanced technical skills. Upon completion of the program, participants gain not just improved technical skills and a deeper understanding of orchestral literature, but also the experience of performing in a full symphonic orchestra. This experience can foster a lifelong passion for performance and provide the foundation for a career in music.
