Reach & Rise®, an evidence-based mentoring program provided by YMCA Dallas, is designed to build a better future for youth by helping them reach their full potential through the support of caring adults. The main objective of the program is to provide young people in the community with positive adult relationships. In the 1:1 mentoring program, one mentor is matched with one child aged between 6 and 17, meeting weekly for one year. In the group mentoring program, two mentors work with a small group of youth of similar ages, covering self-esteem, communication, and coping skills among others. The delivery of the program varies, with the 1:1 program meetings being held at the YMCA or in the community, depending on the comfort level of the parents. The group program meetings are held weekly over an 8 or 16-week session, for two hours each. Mentors are not replacements for parents but are there to introduce their mentees to new activities and help them learn about themselves and their community. Mentors are required to be 21 years or older, have clean background checks, and possess a desire to support youth through change and challenges. They undergo a thorough screening process, including a detailed application and background check, followed by an initial meeting with the Program Director. Once approved, mentors complete 15+ hours of training before being assigned to a mentee or group. The program provides ongoing training and support for mentors, with goal-setting, planning, and individual telephone support offered as needed. The Reach & Rise® mentoring program helps young people envision and work toward individualized goals. The benefits of being a mentor include building positive relationships, improving self-esteem, developing better supervisory skills, and gaining opportunities for growth. This program is a valuable resource for over-stressed families, helping meet their children’s needs while fostering positive, growth-inducing relationships with adults.
