The Ronald M. Auen Learning Center First Flight Experience, provided by The Palm Springs Air Museum, is a unique opportunity for students aged 12-17 with a strong interest in becoming airline pilots. The program offers these aspiring pilots their first flight experience on the museum's Cessna 182 Skylane, Inspiration One. Before taking off, each participant goes through a pre-flight check with the flight instructor, learning about take-off and landing procedures, as well as how to maneuver the plane in the air. This hands-on experience is designed to foster a deep understanding of aviation and inspire future aviators. The First Flight Experience is an in-person program, delivered through practical flight sessions. The program runs from October through May, offering flights on the first Saturday of every month. Participants are scheduled for their flight day at any point between October and May. Each flight session lasts approximately 30 minutes. The program is led by certified flight instructors who guide the students through the pre-flight checks and flight procedures. While specific details about the instructors are not provided, their role as certified flight instructors ensures their expertise in teaching and aviation. To participate, students must be local residents aged 12-17, who have never had any flight experience and have a serious interest in becoming a pilot. It is recommended that students be at least 4’10” tall to ensure they can see out the windshield of the plane and reach the pedals. There are also several safety and logistical requirements, such as the need for closed-toe shoes and the ability to board the aircraft without assistance. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate commemorating their flight. The time spent in the air counts towards the total number of hours needed to qualify for a pilot’s license. Following the flight, participants also have the opportunity to take a pilot assessment with the museum's partners, SoCal Pilot Center, to identify their strengths and guide them towards improving their chances of success. This includes an assessment in a fully immersive flight simulator. This comprehensive program is offered at no cost to families, demonstrating the museum's commitment to fostering the next generation of aviators.
