The Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra, an offering by the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra (LAYO), is an intermediate-level ensemble designed for young musicians. This orchestra carries the namesake of Ruth Borun, a significant patron and friend of LAYO since its inception. Under the directorship of Assistant Conductor Jorge Padrón, the ensemble often performs quality arrangements of classical and contemporary music. The Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra focuses on delivering pieces such as Saint-Saëns' "Bacchanale" from Sampson and Delilah, Vivaldi's "Summer", Beethoven's Symphony No. 1, Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise", and Williams' "Empire Strikes Back". The ensemble provides a platform for intermediate musicians to hone their skills and gain practical experience. The orchestra has even had the opportunity to perform at significant venues like Carnegie Hall. The orchestra requires students to continue taking weekly private lessons and practice daily. It demands serious commitment from its participants, but promises substantial benefits. Students can expect to improve their playing level, learn orchestra masterworks, perform in major concert halls, and even premiere new music. Moreover, students often find that their participation in LAYO aids in their college applications. The ultimate goal of the orchestra is to develop a lifelong passion for music by building a community that will be the future of culture. To join the Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra, young musicians, aged 8-18, with intermediate and advanced proficiency, are required to audition. They must have at least two years of private instruction, regardless of their school affiliation. Rehearsals demand punctuality and commitment, with only two excused absences permitted per semester. No excused absences are allowed for the dress rehearsal or performances. Hence, students are expected to have a commitment to their involvement in the orchestra.
