The "Saturday Program: Media Production" course offered by The Cooper Union introduces students to both the technical and creative facets of media production. The main objective of this course is to provide training in various techniques across photography, film, audio, and video, along with introducing students to the study of media, culture, and communication. The course is designed to immerse students in the art of visual storytelling through film and sound. Throughout the course, students will acquire foundational skills in shooting, producing, and editing video, along with basics in lighting and sound production. These are the key skills and topics covered, and this knowledge is essential for anyone interested in the media production field. This allows students to effectively communicate messages and tell compelling stories through different forms of media. The program culminates in a Year End Show where students' work is shown for friends and family. The instructors for this course are visiting professional artists as well as current Cooper Union undergraduate students, providing a "near peer" mentoring experience for the high school participants. Eligibility is centered around students attending a New York City public or charter high school, those attending a school without a comprehensive visual art program, students qualifying for free school breakfast and/or lunch, and those coming from low- or moderate-income households. The program encourages applications from individuals who identify with groups historically excluded from visual arts careers. Upon completion of the course, students would have gained practical skills in various aspects of media production. This includes proficiency in shooting, producing, and editing video, along with understanding the basics of lighting and sound production. These skills are essential for a career in media production, making this course an excellent opportunity for high school students interested in this field.
