The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) for High School Students at Borough of Manhattan Community College is a pre-college enrichment program that aims to increase the presence of historically underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) careers, and licensed professions. This is achieved through innovative academic enrichment in science and mathematics content areas. The enrichment program includes laboratories for supervised training in research methods, summer programs, and assistance with the college application process. An important feature of the program is its focus on preparatory coursework for standardized tests. For instance, the SAT preparation course offered as part of STEP provides students with an edge to pass the SAT with potentially competitive scores for colleges nationwide. This course includes academic instruction, basic college application details, and individualized academic coaching to help students cope with exam pressure. This component of the program is only open to high school juniors and seniors. To participate in the STEP program, students must be residents of New York State, have lived in the state for at least a year, and be attending a New York City high school. They will also need to submit economic eligibility documentation. The program is coordinated by Darnell Benoit and Cory Mcken, who provide guidance and support to all participants. Upon completion of the STEP program, students will have enriched their understanding of science and mathematics, gained valuable research skills, and received comprehensive preparation for standardized tests.
