This learning opportunity offers high school students a hands-on experience in environmental conservation by engaging them in shoreline cleanup activities along New York City's waterways. Participants will actively contribute to protecting local biodiversity by removing debris that threatens reef sites and the surrounding ecosystem. The program is free and designed to foster community stewardship among volunteers of all ages, making it accessible and inclusive for a wide audience. Throughout the program, students will develop essential environmental awareness and practical skills in waste management and ecosystem preservation. The curriculum includes topics such as the impact of pollution on marine life, techniques for effective debris removal, and the importance of community involvement in environmental protection. These topics are explored through interactive sessions that combine lectures, group discussions, and hands-on cleanup projects. The program is conducted in person, with participants meeting at designated shoreline locations around the city. Volunteers should come prepared for physical activity, including climbing on rocks and getting wet, as they work to clear debris from the shorelines. The program is flexible in its schedule, allowing students to participate in various events throughout the year, with each session typically lasting 3 hours. No prior experience is required, making this an ideal opportunity for students interested in environmental science, marine biology, or community service. Upon completion, participants will gain valuable insights into environmental conservation, practical experience in shoreline cleanup, and a sense of accomplishment from contributing to the protection of their local ecosystem.
