The Spare Parts Internship offered by Spare Parts is an unpaid program designed for high school and college students interested in learning the operational processes of a second-hand store. The internship is structured over an 8-week period, with flexibility in scheduling to accommodate the intern's needs. Throughout this program, interns gain practical experience in various aspects of store operations - from intake of materials, processing of donations, sales floor merchandising, to checkout processes. Interns also engage in key areas that drive the mission of Spare Parts. These include volunteer coordination, educational program development, digital marketing and communications, and fundraising development. Moreover, interns are given the opportunity to work on special projects that align with their areas of interest or expertise, thereby contributing to the growth of the organization. The internship program is facilitated by a team comprising volunteers, committee members, and board members, all committed to advancing sustainability and creativity. By the end of the program, interns are expected to have a good working knowledge of running a small second-hand store and the impact a small nonprofit can make in the local community. The Spare Parts Internship is offered three times a year in the Spring (February to April), Summer (May to August), and Fall (September to November). Interested applicants should meet the qualifications which include basic computer skills, an interest and knowledge of the arts and sustainable practices, and the ability to stand and walk around for multiple hours, among other physical requirements. The application deadlines are January 15th for the Spring Internship, April 15th for the Summer Internship, and August 15th for the Fall Internship. The internship is conducted under the guidance of Spare Parts' Board of Directors and Executive Director, who possess extensive experience in their respective fields. For instance, the Executive Director, Maggi Peachey, joined the Spare Parts board in 2020 and has been instrumental in the organization's growth and development. Overall, the Spare Parts Internship provides comprehensive exposure to the operations of a second-hand store, promoting sustainable practices and creative arts, and offers a platform for professional growth and development in a nonprofit setting.
