Stanford Splash is a non-residential enrichment program that provides students the opportunity to learn a variety of subjects from passionate teachers. The teachers, who are mainly composed of college students and local community members, create their own classes, ensuring each topic is led by someone enthusiastic about it. The subject matter for classes ranges from casual hobbies to intensive academic subjects, with class formats that may be lecture-style, hands-on, or discussion-based. The classes are generally one to four hours long and held in-person on Stanford's campus. The program runs twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring, over the course of a weekend from about 10 AM to 5 PM. The program operates on a lottery system where interested students can indicate their preferences for classes they want to take. Students must be in at least the 8th grade to participate in Stanford Splash, or if homeschooled and not following a traditional grade structure, they must be at least 13 years old. Students are required to have a high level of maturity and independence as they are unsupervised between classes and are free to wander the Stanford campus when not in class. While there are no specific outcomes and benefits stated, the program's main objective is to provide fun and accessible education to students, exposing them to a wide range of topics and learning experiences. It is a unique opportunity for students to explore new subjects and learn from enthusiastic and knowledgeable teachers.
