The Sports Medicine course offered by Wake Forest University is an online program that provides an inside look at major sports injuries and treatments. The course is specifically focused on three common sports-related injuries — ACL tears, shoulder dislocations, and concussions. Participants learn about the traumas and treatments of star athletes and gain insights on the anatomy and preferred treatment options for these injuries. The course curriculum includes studying case studies of actual professional sports stars, their treatments, and outcomes. Participants also gain an understanding of concussions and the resulting traumatic brain injuries that occur in sports. They learn how an ACL knee injury is diagnosed and treated, gain insight on the anatomy of a shoulder dislocation, and explore the college majors and careers associated with sports medicine. The course is taught by Dr. Brian Waterman, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. He is the Chief and Fellowship Director of Sports Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Mentoring is also provided by Wake Forest University graduates who have experience in the healthcare field. The Sports Medicine course is delivered 100% online and offers 20-25 hours of total instruction and coursework. It runs over multiple 1-, 2- and 4-week sessions throughout the year, with applications accepted on a rolling basis. This program is open to students aged 13 and older. Upon completion of the course, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of sports injuries and their treatments. They will also be able to present a sports injury and recommend a treatment plan, and gain insights into potential careers in the field of sports medicine.
