The American Youth Symphonic Orchestra (AYSO), offered by the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras (AYPO), is a full orchestral ensemble program that emphasizes musical and leadership development. This program is designed for high school students, typically in 10th grade, who have a strong interest in classical music. The curriculum focuses on providing both brass and woodwind players with solo opportunities and emphasizes classical masterpieces fundamental to a young player’s musical education. The program is delivered in-person with rehearsals taking place every Monday from 7:00-9:30pm in the McLean/Vienna area. These rehearsals run from September through May, during which time the ensemble prepares at least three programs of repertoire for performance. The AYSO has had the privilege of performing at notable venues such as The National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., and George Mason University's Center for the Arts in Fairfax, VA. The program is conducted by Glenn Quader, although further details about his qualifications and background are not provided. Eligibility for the program is primarily based on grade level, with the program being open to students in grades 9th-12th. However, the average participant is in the 10th grade. Participation in the AYSO offers students an opportunity to enhance their musical skills, particularly in classical music, and develop leadership abilities. Students get the chance to perform at renowned venues, thereby gaining practical experience and exposure. The program does not mention specific certifications or qualifications that participants will gain.
