The Symphonic Winds is an ensemble program offered by the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra (TYWO), designed for senior high school students as well as advanced junior high school students. Under the guidance of conductor Dan Horner, the program aims to train students in detailed, mature music making, exploring a wide variety of literature. The students are expected to have intermediate to advanced level of experience on their instrument. The repertoire for the program ranges between levels 3 to 5. The Symphonic Winds ensemble frequently participates in the Ontario Band Association’s Band Festival, where they have been recognized with several awards including the Yamaha Percussion Excellence Award, the OBA Woodwind Excellence Award, and an overall Gold Standing. These accolades testify to the high level of skill and musical knowledge that participants can expect to acquire. The program is delivered in person, with the main rehearsal location being the Meridian Arts Centre, located at 5040 Yonge Street in North York. On special occasions, rehearsals may take place at different locations. The regular rehearsal schedule runs from September to May, taking place on Sunday afternoons from 12:00 to 2:00pm. The Symphonic Winds performs multiple concerts annually, culminating in a final concert in May at the Meridian Arts Centre. Auditions for participation in the program are held on September 15. These auditions help the organizers understand the potential participants better, determine the most suitable ensemble for them, and establish seating arrangements. The program emphasizes the importance of performance excellence, friendship, and fun, making it a unique and rewarding learning opportunity for young musicians.
