The Talent Development Program (TDP) offered by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is an initiative with the objective of identifying, mentoring, and fostering the development of middle and high school musicians of African American and Latine heritage in Atlanta. The program aims to prepare these students for professional careers in classical music, catering to those with a passion for classical music and a drive towards becoming professional musicians. The key elements of the TDP curriculum include weekly private lessons with a professional ASO musician, opportunities for solo recital and chamber music performances, technical and performance juries, and assistance in preparing for auditions. This comprehensive approach to developing musical mastery ensures that students acquire a high level of proficiency on a standard orchestral instrument. The TDP is delivered in-person, providing an immersive and interactive learning experience. It allows students to benefit from one-on-one mentorship and coaching, and even offers complimentary tickets to ASO classical concerts for Fellows and their families, thereby exposing them to professional performances. While the exact duration and schedule of the program are not specified, it is mentioned that the program is year-round. The TDP is taught by a diverse team of experienced instructors from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, including Bob Anemone and Carolyn Toll Hancock (violin), Dr. Marilyn Seelman (viola), Karen Freer (cello), Elisabeth Remy Johnson and Ellen Foster (harp), C. Todd Skitch (flute), Emily Brebach (oboe), Ryan Little (horn), Nathan Zgonc and Dr. William Mann (trombone), Michael Moore (tuba), Nicholas Scholefield (bass), Jay Christy (violin), and Michael Jarrett (percussion). Eligibility for the TDP is open to serious music students in rising fifth grade to rising tenth grade who have at least one parent who is either African American or Latine. These students must have already reached a high level of proficiency on a standard orchestral instrument. Upon completion of the TDP, students can expect to have significantly advanced their musical skills, preparing them for a career in classical music. The program also provides a platform for the students to perform and showcase their talent, and the experience of performing solo recitals and chamber music is invaluable for aspiring professional musicians.
