Apex for Youth's Mentoring Program seeks to address the personal, educational, and social needs of middle and high school students. It does this through the development of one-on-one relationships with adult volunteers. The program's main objectives include nurturing confidence in the youth and preparing them for college and career success, encouraging them to play an active role in their communities. The program also strives to help mentees develop self-identity, manage relationships and stress, and plan for their future. The Mentoring Program is offered both in NYC for in-person mentoring and nationally as a virtual mentoring program. Mentors and mentees meet at least twice a month for a minimum of two years, providing a consistent presence in the mentees' lives. The program is designed to be flexible, with the exact meeting requirements varying according to the specific mentoring program. Potential mentors are required to be at least 21 years old and possess traits such as patience, positivity, and resourcefulness. They should also value diversity and have a youth-centered mindset and empathy for young people. As for the mentees, they must be attending a school for grades 6-12 and have the time and interest to meet with a mentor twice a month for at least two years. The program gives priority to low-income Asian American youth. The benefits of the Mentoring Program are numerous. Participants can expect to develop self-confidence, a clearer sense of self-identity, and enhanced relationship and stress management skills. They would also gain valuable insights into their future planning, including career and college preparation.
