East Boston Social Centers offers a comprehensive program called Thriving Teens. This program is designed to support the youth of East Boston in developing academic, social, emotional, and leadership skills. Its main objective is to improve attitudes toward school, increase academic achievement, and expose youth to different career pathways. To achieve this, the program incorporates activities focused on reducing stress, increasing positive coping skills, and developing self-esteem and leadership skills. The program is delivered through after-school activities that reflect the diversity of youth in East Boston and surrounding neighborhoods. It is designed to be inclusive, accessible, safe, and welcoming for teens and families of all backgrounds and abilities. It is also 100% free for all youth, making it accessible without a financial barrier. The Thriving Teens program is centered around five pillars of joy: Relationships, Purpose, Mindfulness, Fun, and Fitness. Participants engage in group icebreakers and games, thoughtful discussions, organized sports, and mindfulness practices. They also take part in service projects to engage the East Boston community. The program includes homework assistance, career and college readiness workshops, and leadership and technical training. The program is open to youth aged 14 to 19. One of the notable features of the program is the Joyful Eastie Youth Council, which was developed to engage youth in creating a more joyful East Boston community. Through this council, teens learn about key factors for living a joyful life, develop and implement approaches to increase personal and community joy, reduce stress, increase positive coping skills, reduce social isolation, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, increase leadership skills, and increase positive engagement with adults, organizations, and peers. While exact details about the instructors' qualifications are not given, the program is guided by a team that uses data-driven methods to track the achievement of participants, through surveys and self-assessments. This data-driven approach ensures the success and continuous improvement of the program.
