The Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO), a leading youth orchestra in Canada, is a unique, powerful, and life-enriching opportunity that encourages significant achievement for talented young musicians aged 22 and under. For over 50 years, the TSYO has been providing a high-level orchestral experience, regardless of the career path the participants choose to pursue. The TSYO program is delivered in-person, with weekly rehearsals happening from mid-September to the last week of April. These sessions occur on Saturday afternoons at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music, in the Edward Johnson Building. The orchestra highlights three concerts each year at premier performance venues in Toronto, each featuring different orchestral repertoire. Additionally, TSYO members may perform in various outreach concerts as opportunities arise. The TSYO also presents its members with the opportunity to engage in masterclasses led by world-renowned guest artists and conductors, and compete in the Concerto Competition. The TSYO program is instructed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) musicians who serve as coaches throughout the season. Guest artists from TSO also lead masterclasses for TSYO members, resulting in a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. Moreover, the TSYO performs annually with the TSO in a side-by-side concert at Roy Thomson Hall, offering a practical, hands-on experience to its members. There is no minimum age or grade level required to audition for the TSYO. Applicants are accepted into the orchestra based on their performance in their audition, which usually involves repertoire excerpts from the upcoming season’s planned repertoire. The TSYO is a tuition-free program, with each successful applicant being accepted as a TSYO member on a scholarship provided by the TSO and its supporters. The benefits of participating in the TSYO program include a high-level orchestral experience, the opportunity to work with professional musicians, participation in masterclasses and concerts, and the potential to win special prizes through competitions.
