Tuesday and Thursday Night Tutoring (TNT) by 826LA is a free educational program primarily intended for middle and high school students. The core objective of the program is to provide a conducive environment where students can work through their homework with the assistance of volunteers from various backgrounds, including retired educators, writers, and college students. The volunteers not only help with students' homework but also guide them through a creative writing project. This project entails writing, editing, and refining works that are subsequently published into chapbooks once a year, thus enabling students to develop their unique voices and engage with difficult subject matter. The tutoring sessions take place in 826LA's writing labs, where students work in small-group writing workshops. The diversity in volunteer backgrounds and areas of expertise enriches the student experience as they navigate through their assignments. Before they begin volunteering, all volunteers are required to complete a background check and orientation, ensuring a safe and professional environment for the students. Students participating in TNT must adhere to certain requirements. They must qualify for Free or Reduced Priced Lunch and/or attend a Title 1 School, commit to regularly attending the program twice a week for the duration of the school year, and participate in all aspects of the tutoring program, including the writing process for the chapbooks. The benefits of participating in TNT extend beyond academic support. Students have the opportunity to become published authors, which not only boosts their confidence but also enhances their writing skills and creativity. They also develop their social emotional skills as they interact with their peers and volunteers in a nurturing setting. The program does not provide specific certifications but offers invaluable experience and exposure to a creative, collaborative learning environment.
