The US Biology Olympiad (USABO) provided by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) aims to identify, inspire, and support the next generation of life science leaders while fostering an international network of biology scholars. It seeks to stimulate the talents of highly gifted biology students, nurture their curiosity, and propel them towards excellence and leadership in biology-based careers. The curriculum covers a comprehensive range of topics in biology including lab equipment and skills, cell and molecular biology, plant and animal anatomy and physiology, ecology, genetics and evolution, biosystematics, statistics, modeling, computational biology, and bioinformatics. Key activities include a practical examination and a theoretical examination. The USABO is delivered through a structured series of exams beginning with the online Open Exam, which is a 50-minute multiple-choice test available to high school biology students (Grades 9 to 12) registered by a school or an authorized USABO Center. The Open Exam is administered at registered schools or authorized test centers within designated online periods. Participants who progress will engage in further rounds, culminating in intensive individual tutoring, review sessions, and labs. The schedule spans several days, involving both practical and theoretical assessments, followed by awards and team days. The Open Exam does not have penalties for guessing and recognition is given to top performers with certificates. Eligibility for participation requires students to be registered by schools that comply with specific guidelines, including having a state-certified teacher as the lead test administrator. Students are encouraged to have taken advanced or AP biology courses but it is not mandatory; a strong interest and work ethic are essential. By participating in the USABO, students can expect to gain in-depth knowledge and skills in various biology subfields, fostering their potential for future academic and career success in the life sciences.
