The USA Astronomy and Astrophysics Team, organized by the USA Astronomy and Astrophysics Organization (USAAAO), aims to select and train a team of high school students to represent the USA at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). The program is designed to foster student interest and expertise in astronomy through competitive exams and intensive training. Participants engage with complex topics in astronomy and astrophysics, ranging from observational astronomy to theoretical cosmology. The training is delivered online through free weekly sessions, which include readings, assignments, homework, and discussions. This format allows students to prepare effectively for the IOAA. The coaching team comprises past IOAA participants and professional astronomers and astrophysicists, all of whom volunteer their expertise to guide the students. To participate in the national team, students must be US citizens or permanent residents. The selection involves a First Round Exam and the National Astronomy Competition (NAC), where the top scorers qualify for the team. This opportunity enables participants to develop their skills in astronomy and astrophysics, potentially leading to national and international recognition through competitions like the IOAA.
