The Visionary Studio Saturday Art Workshop, offered by New York University (NYU), is a free and open-to-all, theme-based studio art program that runs for 8 weeks during the spring semester (March-May). The workshop is designed for high school students in the New York City area, and addresses significant social issues through the exploration of various art-making practices and media. It aims to connect current social justice issues with dynamic art-making practices, allowing students to visually express their ideas on topics such as climate change, racism, gender identity, economics, and politics. The curriculum is delivered in-person and includes drawing, painting, printmaking, video, photography, 3-dimensional media, and installation techniques. The workshop encourages students to think beyond traditional artistic media and explore how artistic influence can be extended to include what has historically been excluded. Classes run from 10 am–12 pm on Saturday mornings and are taught by teams of graduate students from the Initial Certification in Art+Education program at NYU. The workshop does not require any prior experience or a portfolio, making it accessible to students with all levels of art experience. The program concludes with a final exhibition, inviting a wide audience of parents, friends, teachers, and NYU faculty, to view the students' work. This allows participants to gain appreciation for their work and insights into the impact of their creative expressions on societal issues. The 2024 program, for instance, explored the theme "From Me to We", examining the complexity of identity and the possibilities for connecting the self to community in transformative ways through multimedia art activities.
