The Youth Leadership Service Corps (YLSC) offered by MissionSAFE is a program designed to foster the development of leadership, communication, problem-solving, social, and life skills in teens through nurturing relationships and community involvement. The YLSC aims to instill in its participants a better understanding of the opportunities available to them, develop empathy, curiosity and a habit of learning, and equip them with tools for self-discovery and achieving personal goals through further education, training, or employment. During the school year, participants engage in a diverse array of activities, including exploration of college and career opportunities, educational enrichment, job readiness, financial literacy, arts, community service, and civic engagement. They are also exposed to new cultural and outdoor experiences. The program emphasizes learning to build and maintain a safe and productive community, understanding the concept of power, and using it responsibly. The eligibility criteria for YLSC include being in high school and having an interest in improving their academic futures, and in civic engagement and leadership, career exploration, college tours, arts, or podcasting. Upon completion of the program, participants are expected to have a deeper understanding of their community and city, and to be able to serve them in dynamic and interesting ways. They also gain a greater understanding of opportunities available to them, develop empathy, curiosity, and a habit of learning, as well as tools to know themselves better and to achieve personal goals through training, further education, and/or employment.
