Youth United (YU) is a youth-led program that is part of the Youth Leadership Institute. The program focuses on social and racial justice within communities, working to address policy issues in areas such as public parks, roadway conditions, affordable housing, and employment opportunities. YU makes use of Youth Participatory Action Research methodology to identify and develop intentional advocacy strategies, ensuring youth voices and experiences are at the center of creating lasting policy change. The program involves active campaigns advocating for improvements in local infrastructure, including parks and roads. These campaigns aim to include youth voices in decision-making processes, particularly those affecting their immediate environment. As such, the program is dedicated to equipping participants with skills in advocacy, leadership, and research. The Youth Leadership Institute's adult allies serve as mentors for the participants, providing guidance and support throughout the program. The mentors include the YU Program Manager and the YU Program Coordinator, who have extensive experience in youth leadership and advocacy. Their role is not just to teach, but also to help young people become articulate presenters, capable listeners, compelling storytellers, organizers, politicians, and inspiring community advocates. While the specific schedule and duration of the program are not detailed, it is clear that the program is geared towards creating a community of young leaders ready to effect change in their communities. The program appears to be designed for young people who are passionate about social justice and community improvement. The primary outcomes include the development of advocacy and leadership skills, as well as a deeper understanding of social and racial justice issues.
