YouthWorks is a comprehensive internship program designed for high school students aged 15 to 17, offered by the DISCOVERY Children's Museum. The program's primary objective is to provide a unique opportunity for students to gain work experience and enhance their lives through education. The program aims to build a record of community service for high school credit and college portfolios, thereby aiding in their professional and personal growth. The program's curriculum intertwines educational and career guidance, work readiness, and life skills training within an interdisciplinary Museum setting. Participants start their journey by volunteering in the museum's eight primary galleries, which allows them to get acquainted with the museum's policies, procedures, and mission statement. This initial experience also offers a chance for participants to interact with other interns and staff members. The program operates on-site, and the museum accommodates participants with disabilities by assigning them to areas suited to their abilities. Being a part of this program is not just about performing job assignments; it also offers exposure to different areas of the museum organization, providing practical experiences in a professional environment. Notably, intern positions are paid, giving the youth an additional source of income. To be eligible for the program, students must be between 15 and 17 years old, currently enrolled in high school, and have completed volunteer training in all eight galleries at the museum. They should also be active volunteers in good standing. Applications for the YouthWorks Internship are accepted year-round. The program, established in 1993, has been benefiting local teenagers by equipping them with valuable life skills and work experience, enhancing their educational journey, and preparing them for their future career paths.
