The YW Geek Girls program by the YWCA NYC is a weekly initiative that offers self-identified high school girls and gender non-conforming youth an immersive STEM experience, irrespective of their prior involvement in the field. This program is an integral part of the YWCA NYC's broader Girls Initiatives STEAAM Programs, which focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Activism, and Math. The program's main objective is to provide participants with hands-on workshops and training, networking opportunities with women experts and leaders, and access to guest speakers. Participants in the YW Geek Girls program collaborate to apply scientific approaches and techniques toward solving a social issue. The curriculum is designed to develop skills in science, technology, engineering, art, advocacy, and mathematics. The program runs in 3-month sessions from October to December and again from March to May, and the timing is scheduled from 4:30-6pm. Specific dates for these sessions and the application deadlines are typically updated on the YWCA NYC website prior to the start of each program. As a part of the program, participants are also exposed to inspiring women who lead in STEM, and are encouraged to design tech solutions to cultivate a more equitable future. The Geek Girls program is delivered in-person, with participants having the opportunity to engage in field trips and listen to guest speakers. The primary outcome of this program is to equip participants with a broad range of skills in the STEAAM disciplines, and to inspire them to consider future possibilities in these fields.
