The ZooTeens program offered by The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is a unique and empowering opportunity for young individuals aged 14 to 18 years, passionate about wildlife conservation. This volunteer program aims to instill valuable life and job readiness skills in a fun and collaborative environment. The curriculum encompasses area-specific training in guest interaction areas such as the Petting Kraal, Discovery Center, and G-Scale Model Train Display. Participants receive training in public speaking and guest services, and can explore topics like zoology, conservation, and career development. The program spans four years, with each year building on the knowledge and skills gained in the previous year. Commitment to the program involves two shifts of volunteer service per month, along with participation in special events throughout the year. The application process typically begins in the fall. Prerequisites for the program include an age range of 14 to 18 years at the start of the program, and a willingness to represent The Living Desert in a friendly and professional manner. No prior experience is necessary, as the program values passion for wildlife conservation and an eagerness to learn. Participation in the ZooTeens program offers several benefits. It provides opportunities to develop leadership skills, explore career guidance, and even unlock scholarship opportunities. The program can help shape participants’ understanding of conservation, enhance their communication skills, and foster a deeper appreciation for wildlife. The experience and skills gained through the ZooTeens program can also be instrumental in pursuing careers in natural science or conservation-related fields.
